I found this plaque from old School #1 last summer in storage at the Old Industrial High School

I have fond memories of the Dunkirk High School Band...especially the trips we took to Middletown NY and New York City...and to Warsaw Indiana and Notre Dame University....and I remember all the musicals we did every year...those were the best of times!
I also remember the Murraymen Drum & Bugle Corps...such great Memories...I used to march with them...and was thier Drum Major around 1965...Jim Erick DHS63

Some things just never seem to change!

I'll never forget Mr Pazar...He taught me 11th grade Social Studies...he was the one who announced to our Class on November 22 1964 that President Kennedy had been shot...
Now that I'm a High School Teacher I think of Students in my 3rd period class on September 11 2001 as we watched the 2nd plane crash into the World Trade Center...and the Buildings fall...I turned the TV off for a while when they said the Pentagon had also been hit...I'll bet they'll remember that Class for the rest of thier lives...just as I remembered Mr Pazar's Class!....Fran Mancuso Collier DHS65

Shooting baskets at the "Athletci Field" 1963

I was in the old High School in 7th grade in 1958 when the old building started to fall down...and they had to put up all these wood beams to shore it up....then they made us go to double sessions for the rest of the year!...Jim Erick DHS63

Dunkirk High Football players with Bedford plant in background 1944

I remember annual trips into Buffalo to buy school clothes...we could never buy clothes locally ...My Mom insisted we trudge into Buffalo....MY Father "Hated" those trips as we always got lost! I always had a short attention span and those trips always pushed it way beyond what a kid could tolorate ...I just loved riding the escalators and elevators of AM&As...and Hengerers...By the time I got home I had tons of clothes that were all 12 sizes too big with 6 inches of extra leg room (My Mom didn't believe in buying clothers that fit...only clothes we could grow into!)and my Mom was always pissed off and exhausted as every time she turned around I'd be off again riding my beloved escalators and elevators ...she'd hunt me down and drag me back to try on 23 more pairs of pants until I managed to escape once again!

I also remember getting to ride over the "Father Baker Bridge" and the "Skyway Bridge" over the steel mills of Lackawana (we didn't use the NY State Thruway...that cost 35 cents and since my Dad was gonna get lost anyhow...he might as well save the 35 cents!

I also remember going with my Dad to work when I was small...occasionally we would drive over the Cassadaga Hill into Stockton...no big deal in Summer...but quite harrowing in winter on ice slicked roads...I remember once we were spinning and sliding all over the road...I had a wonderful time...but my Dad just never seemed to enjoy it!... Go Figure!

Dunkirk High Students hold thier Big Dance in the Girl's Gym

1959

I remember many cold winter nights when the winds would be blowing and a blizzard of snow would be piling high on our driveway and yard...and I remember my Dad at the front window worrying how on earth he was going to get the car out in the morning!...I remembering listening to my radio to WDOE (gravely voiced Chet somebody) for school closings after the big blizzard...and hearing of EVERY SCHOOL CLOSED for 50 miles EXCEPT DUNKIRK!

I remember the last time the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus came to Dunkirk....I think it was 1959...the Circus Train pulled into the siding that ran into the ALCO Plant ...that siding ran between Courtney and Talcott Streets...I lived on Lord Street ...my bedroom was on the 2nd floor...somehow me and my friends found out that the Cirus train was coming to town...so I was the "lookout"...It came through at 5:30 am that morning and I called all the guys...but it just wasn't the train...it was the animal cars and circus carts and they unloaded them right there at my house! They made a caravan with all the circus animals and walked over Talcott Street to Main Street and up to the Fairgrounds! David Kubinski DHS63
