A Look Back

New Life for Midnszenty High

New Life for Mindszenty High #2

Anyone remember when the old High school was over where the Jr High is now? and the "Athletic Field" was where the current High School now sits...every winter they would flood the "gully" and we could all ice skate on this huge frozen pond...that was as good as things ever got!

And right across the street was a rope swing over the creek near the back of Strawser's house...where their Dad built a bridge out of old telephone poles...Kids in my neighborhood spent hours and hours swinging on that rope! (we also used to smoke over there cuz we were off school property)

I remember when Dunkirk boasted having the "Tallest One Piece Wooden Flagpole in the World"...or something like that!...I also recall that when they tore it down as it was rotting...and replaced with a new steel pole...but they kept the old Plaque "Tallest One Piece Wooden Flagpole" Hey...Who You guys trying to Fool???

I remember when horse drawn sidewalk plows cleared the early morning snowfall....or the dull pounding of the big hammer at the Alco plant on a calm summer evening...or the smell of burning leaves in the fall when your parents would rake a big pile of leaves to the curbside and would burn them there...but only after you and all the other kids had finished jumping in them...In grade school you would ride your bike to school and would...if you found the right kind of cardbaord ...clip it to the bike frame to make a roaring sound....and at that moment you no longer had a Schwinn or a Roadmaster bicycle, Oh No...you were now riding a great and powerful motorcycle...Now admit it!

Those were the Days...were they not? I remember going to the dock at the foot of Central Avenue and watching the fishing boats unload the days catch...

THE LAST THING I REMEMBER was a bottle of tequila being poured from the hands of someone standing on top of the bar at "BJs" in Fredonia....there were about 300 people crammed inside...which made things comfortable...and I opened my mouth as the cool liquid began to flow into my throat...I kept swallowing...soon my throat and stomach were on fire...and the fire erupted into my head...and I became warm and fuzzy...that was 1969 I think....my last conscious thoughts was the music of the Beatles..."Help"

"Where am I & Is it still 1969???"
